In 2025 there are only a handful of websites that people actually use. This blog is not one of them and never will be. Why even write a blog when there are sites used by millions where my thoughts will be read by at least a few people? Why make my own website instead of using one of the endless number of blogging platforms?

Blogs as a Journaling Exercise

I suppose the main reason why I've launched this site is to just consolidate my thoughts about a variety of topics into one place. I don't really believe that people need to hear my thoughts on anything in particular, but that does not affect my need to say them anyway. I've worried a long time about growing as a writer, and spent too much time reading advice on how to get started than actually starting. Since at my job I'm now our documentation lead, I should get some more practice at writing my thoughts cohesively.

Maybe some people write journals and claim they are private but secretly want someone to read them. I think we all want to be understood and I'm hoping a few people stumble across this blog.

The Old Internet

I'm old enough to remember an internet where there wasn't only a handful of sites that people went to. There used to be numerous blogs of people in niche hobbies with titles like "Tim's Dungeon of Sanguine Horror" or "The Necrophonic Wizard Zone". The people who wrote these blogs were auteurs of their own domain. You had to engage with their content the way they wanted you to. These people would maybe write some articles about their hobby, but they'd also write about their lives and opinions on numerous things. Each blog had a feeling and format unique to that individual. It was wild, weird, and wonderful. This is my attempt to recreate some of that magic.

Since I'm a web developer I have control over all aspects of this site. I'm a fan of buttons that have strange behavior, or routes that don't have any links that direct to them.
